Ingredients
- 3 large ripe avocados
- 2 tbsp lime juice (about 1 lime)
- 1/4 cup red onion (finely diced)
- 1 whole jalapeno (seeded and finely minced)
- 3 tbsp fresh cilantro (chopped)
- 1 medium roma tomato (seeded and diced)
- 1 clove garlic (finely minced)
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp ground cumin
Instructions
- 1
Halve avocados, remove pits, and scoop flesh into a bowl. Add lime juice and salt immediately. Mash with a fork to your preferred texture — chunky is traditional.
The lime juice does double duty: prevents browning and adds essential brightness. Add it right away.
- 2
Fold in red onion, jalapeno, cilantro, tomato, garlic, and cumin. Stir gently. Taste and adjust salt and lime to your preference.
Taste as you go. Guacamole should hit all notes: fatty, salty, acidic, and a touch of heat.
- 3
Let sit 5-10 minutes at room temperature for flavors to come together. Serve with warm tortilla chips.
Restaurant secret: Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning if not serving immediately. The pit trick is a myth.
